The Lervigskvartalet project in Stavanger is an extensive development that includes a school, kindergarten, community center, multi-purpose hall, and retail spaces – a major boost for the entire district. As with many large projects located in city centers, there is limited space between the building and the surrounding busy streets. Strict safety and progress requirements for public buildings like these are also important factors when choosing a logistic solution. This is where Liftroller makes a difference, helping save time, money, and improving ergonomic conditions for construction workers.
The new-build project Lervigskvartalet
- Project: “Lervigskvartalet”
- Project type: New build
- Size: 26.000 m2
- Contractor: Skanska Norge AS
- Location: Stavanger, Norway
- Liftroller system: Liftroller Floor
Lervigskvartalet – Storhaug’s New Meeting Place
Lervigskvartalet, built by Skanska on behalf of Stavanger Municipality, will become a central gathering place for the entire district. Lervig Nursing Home, a new urban care home completed in 2017, is now being incorporated into this exciting project. It will house various public functions to encourage interaction and lower the threshold for contact between the care home and the community. The nursing home will share outdoor areas with an office and residential building to the west, along with shops, parking facilities, a kindergarten, and a beautiful park area.
Extensive Experience with Spectacular Buildings
Skanska has extensive experience building complex projects with tight schedules. The NOK 750 million contract for Lervigskvartalet is part of a long list of prestigious projects Skanska has been involved in. This isn’t the first time they’ve built a “floating” office building. In 2012, Skanska constructed Statoil’s (now Equinor) spectacular headquarters in Fornebu, where several parts of the building hoer high above the ground. The project manager for Lervigskvartalet, Leonard Hovden, was also part of the team that built Statoil’s headquarters, bringing valuable experience to the table.

Sustainable Solutions
The Lervigskvartalet project places a strong emphasis on sustainable solutions. Several of the buildings will be constructed using mass timber, and the construction site is fossil-free. This highlights the high environmental ambitions set for the project, aiming to minimize environmental impact both during construction and in the operational phase. Crane operator Alexander Meland, who has extensive experience delivering materials to construction sites, is a big fan of the Liftroller system. Reducing crane time to a minimum is just one of the many benefits mentioned. Safety is also a top priority.
Fast Mobilization of Liftroller Floor
On a construction site of this size, with very limited external setup space, the Liftroller system plays a central role. Ensuring that materials can be unloaded from trucks as quickly as possible was important to Skanska when choosing their logistic solution. This was made clear during our visit. Each truck was given a time slot to arrive, and a new crane truck was ready as soon as the previous one was finished. Rolling materials into each floor via the Liftroller Floor provided a smooth flow in material deliveries since the process was so quick. Once a floor was finished, the Liftroller was pulled back, and for the next floor, a new Liftroller was pushed out. On this project, the contractor also took full advantage of the flexibility of the Liftroller Floor. Different ceiling heights from floor to floor, due to technical installations in the ceilings, meant that the adjustable supports on the Liftroller came in handy.
Ronny Brattaas, a ventilation fitter at Skanska’s subcontractor DNF, is one of the people who has used Liftroller the most on this project. He shares the following experience about transporting construction materials in and out of the building using the Liftroller Floor:
Smart Zipper Solution
The Liftroller Floor has four ceiling supports and four wheels. When the work is done, the supports are lowered, allowing the platform to be easily pulled in using the wheels. Since the office building at Lervigskvartalet is being built in mass timber, it’s crucial to keep the timber structure dry to meet the tight schedule. Skanska has therefore developed a smart tarpaulin solution with zippers to keep the building dry between material deliveries. The Liftrollers are only exposed for the short time it takes to roll in the materials. Otherwise, the building is sealed with the smart zipper solution.
Strict Safety Requirements
Skanska is a company with high safety standards. Working with them to develop and test new accessories for the Liftroller is therefore the best evaluation we can get. We share the same values, and the safety of workers is always the top priority. On this project, Skanska tested a new safety net for the Floor model, which will make it even safer to use. This safety net catches anything that may fall out of workers’ pockets or small objects that fall off the load. In addition, they tested a new safety gate that allows workers to use the Liftroller Floor without having to wear personal fall protection harnesses, making it a collective safety measure. We will now conduct a thorough evaluation based on Skanska’s experiences before implementing the new accessories as standard on the Liftroller Floor.
